Mike Brent is an amateur independent animator from Stop Motion Animation.com known as Strider. This information portal is a web community administrated by Anthony Scott. Within this community, Brent focuses mainly on the Eastern European style of stopmotion known as Puppetfilm.
After viewing Street of Crocodiles, [Timothy & Stephen Quay, 1986] Brent says he realized that this was a form of animation “capable of dealing with deeper issues.” He likened the technique to “pure expressionism,” and claims that it has the capacity to provide animators with the tools to express themselves on a par with the greatest masters of any artistic medium.
The Stop Motion Animation Website
The Stop-Motion Handbook, from the resources section of the, has several chapters addressing many of the basic questions an aspiring animator might have. This is core material gathered from the rest of the website. The message board is the heart of Stop Motion Animation.com, but for those who need to warm up, there is a Newbie Corner. For specific information, techniques tips and tricks choose between many informative forums. Although there is an extensive links page provided, Brent talks about learning to be an independent internet researcher. This is because innovation out dates information as quickly as it is loaded.
The Process of Making a Digital Stop Motion Film
In the handbook, Brent sets out to create a basic overview of the entire process of animation from the beginner’s perspective. Without this basic understanding new artists would not know what kind of equipment to buy. The overview sums up how Frame Grabbers work with DVD camcorders and webcams, which he suggests is the easiest way to get started with this kind of animation.
To make it easy to visualize, Brent sets out a scaffolded guide
1.	Capture frames using a frame grabber
2.	Edit footage adding effects, titles, sound and music using standard video editing software
3.	Compress using video compression software
4.	Post it online or output to video
Capture Frames in Stop Motion Animation
Because this is a very broad topic, Brent advises the reader to study Chapter 6: Choosing a Camera for Stopmotion from the handbook. He says that there are advantages for each style of camera that need to be weighed before a final purchasing decision. Webcams or DVD camcorders make it easy to take advantage of powerful Framegrabber programs. Digital Still cameras are still favoured as a way of working with high definition frames.
Brent talks about how to use webcams alongside a main camera to onion skin. This means to view multiple frames at the same time. He also talks of a concept called frame scrubbing, which means flicking through the frames quickly to remind the artist of sequence. This information leads into a technical discussion about rotoscoping, which allows artists to load preshot footage as background for a puppet or creatures. He explains that artists will need to make decisions about compositing software to enable him or her to synch the material together, whilst editing seamlessly.
The article does not offer artists suggestions about what equipment to purchase. Instead, Brent talks about the kinds of technical ability an animator may need to consider, when purchasing animation equipment. In this way, he sets the scene for beginners to ask questions and to research about the method and style that will work best for him or her.
Editing Footage for Animation
Brent makes the distinction between capturing data and editing it. He stresses the need for beginning animators to search out the latest information online. It is possible, he suggests, for artists to teach themselves even the more advanced techniques and ways to use equipment. He also suggests that there may be tasks which require patience and dedication.
Ways to approach learning might be through manuals, message boards and personal experimentation. It seems that a combination of these styles of learning would be freely available online from websites such as StopMotionAnimation.com It can become an expensive hobby or career and so starting out experimentally may save the artist a great deal of time and money. Later real decisions can be made about the types of methods and equipment to use.
Compression of Animation Files
By the time an artist finishes editing their work and has added titles and music, the movie file will be large enough to require compression. Brent offers advice about file size reduction. He suggests that artists cut out any unnecessary information or blank patches in an effort to make the file smaller. He talks about the need for creators to think about the need to download the file on a dial up modem. To this end he recommends abbreviating everything possible for digital animation.

One may wonder if that means that some of the art has left the field of animation or, perhaps, the field is just experiencing a natural evolution. Given the current state of the film industry, one has to wonder if there is a place in today’s industry for those trained in traditional animation.
From Snow White to Toy Story
Disney Animation Studios had a years long history of releasing hand drawn animated films. The movies produced by these Disney animators were critically acclaimed, award winning films. Bambi, Dumbo, Cinderella, Alice in Wonderland, and many many more of the studios hand drawn films have entertained generations.
Their previous history of creating only hand drawn animated films would, however, change with the release of Dinosaur. This film would mark the studios first foray into computer animation. Then in 1995, Disney subsidiary Pixar would release Toy Story. The film was both a critical and commercial success. It was also the first of Pixar’s many feature films created using only computer animation. Pixar would follow the success of their first film with A Bug’s Life, Toy Story 2, Monsters, Inc., Finding Nemo, and many other box office hits.
A Return to the Old Ways
Despite the unquestionable success of computer animation, there were still those who loved the old way. The decision was made by Disney Animation Studios to return to its roots. In the fall of 2009, the studio would release The Princess and the Frog. The film would be mark the studio’s first hand drawn animated film in five years.

There were some who questioned this decision since some of the studios more recent hand drawn films had proven to be less than successful, but the studio had faith that the film would be a success. They also believed that hand drawn animation still had a place in the film industry.
The Future of Animated Films
Only time will tell if traditional hand drawn animation will still be able to thrive in this digital era. If enough studio executives spearhead its usage, then it will certainly have a better chance to survive. With their support, computer animation and hand drawn animation should be able to co-exist. After all, if the story is good enough, then movie-goers will generate blockbuster ticket sales no matter what type of animation was used in the films creation.

Did you ever heard about animation marketing? Over the last couple of decades the face of marketing has changed drastically. About a decade ago marketing underwent another transformation. Where paper advertisements and radio spots used to be, the internet has stepped in to become one of the most widely used advertising and marketing tools throughout the world. Currently more people are using the internet to dig up reviews, information, and products than ever before and the amount of potential clients you can reach is growing daily. With this being the case, how can you make your site, product, or company stand out from the thousands of websites available to be memorable in a client’s mind? This is where animation steps in.
A website complete with tasteful flash animations, informational videos, and interactive content allows visitors to engage with your site and remain there longer to discover more about your company. While a static website is the bare minimum for any business these days, it isn’t enough to win out over a competitor who took the time to include an animation or two on their site. What is needed now is an aesthetically designed, visually appealing, and easy to navigate user interface that will provide a memorable and positive user experience.
Some forms of animation that are used to demonstrate an idea or illustrate a concept and which capture a visitor’s interest are:
•	2D Animation
•	3D Character Animation
•	3D Modeling & Product Design
•	3D Walkthrough Animation
•	3D Mobile, Online and PC Games

Using one of these forms of animation in a short, tasteful, and informative manner can let your visitors get a snapshot of your company before they decide to explore further. This is very similar to the teaser trailer of a movie. You put your best foot forward and from that impression you entice a movie-goer to see your movie weeks or even months later because it impacted their desires and engaged their interest. Using this same analogy we can take it one step further. The visitor watches the trailer (your animation), then decides to read the full plot summary (your text), then they look to find out when and where the movie is playing (your company information), following that they go to see the movie (purchase your product or service). By including an animation on your page you have just moved a visitor to your website into a client for your company. Your animation gave you that leg up on the competition who decided to leave the animation out of their site. In summary the advantages of animation are:
•	more visual appeal
•	lasting impression
•	greater product understanding
•	preference is given by all major search engines to sites with animation

Properly conceived and executed animations have no disadvantages. However, if an animation is poorly done, the impact on your website can be severe. Silly animations on a professional site decrease the company’s image, reliability, and value. Similarly, animations inappropriate for the intended audience can cause a perpetual block on your website and may even offend some visitors. It is for these reasons that you need to meet with a professional web design firm who can work with you to develop an audience appropriate, company mindful animation that can help influence each visitor to decide on your company.
